My little SLP-in-the-making daughter inspired this

My little SLP-in-the-making daughter inspired this sensory bin and it’s some of the best filler I’ve used. I paired it with paper “grass”, my Earth Day Cariboo cards, and a trash can from my kids’ toy collection. You could also hide the pieces from my no prep recycling craft 💚🚛

You could also add empty 🧻rolls and play the game Trash Stash! I know they sell “recycling can” pen holders at the dollar store. So many possibilities!

When my kids were on a pouch kick last year, I decided to save the caps. They are a colossal waste of plastic but I knew I could do SOMETHING therapy-related with them.

After being uninspired, I was ready to donate them to my kids’ “invention” camp this summer. Then my daughter was trying to guess what I was planning for them and she said “a sensory bin”?! It was perfect!

Just like we don’t need to use or expect our kids to use other toys the way in which they were intended - the same is true for fillable eggs!

Sometimes the opening and closing of them is just too laborious or time consuming. I loved this activity just the same!

The number of kids I’ve evaluated in the past few weeks who are nonspeaking and whose parents have said that their current SLP said they “needed PROMPT” is SO infuriating.

It’s funny because in the next breath they’ll also tell me that their kid “can imitate great - when they *want* to.” 🤦🏻‍♀️

We CANNOT diagnose kids who have little to no spoken language/functional language with apraxia. In order to diagnose apraxia, we need to hear their spoken productions of words: how they vary; their prosody and vowel errors; their groping; their poor imitation.

When did “language disorder/difficulty” become so hard to say?! 🤔

Also, stop touching kids’ faces when they can’t consent. *I agree there are ways to consent non verbally.*

That’s my 🧼📦
And, no, I won’t be giving these kids an apraxia diagnosis or PROMPT goals just so you can get more hours or more insurance money 🚫

Today I effed up. ROYALLY.

I was supposed to have an early morning evaluation. I never put it in my calendar, so I completely missed it.

I couldn’t even rush to try and get there because I’d worked out, was a sweaty mess. I couldn’t show up like that.

With all of the (completely regular) life stuff that I (and every other working parent) juggle, I was bound to forget or miss something. Today was the day.

The parent was piiiiiissssssed. There was no way to fix it.

It’s hard tonight to give myself grace and not let this one screw up totally consume my thoughts.

Why do we accept when our clients make mistakes but not ourselves?

Teaching core vocabulary is language therapy. And
