When you’re an SLP mom who uses up all their “fun” bandwidth for other people’s kids, the most energy you can muster for your own is sometimes a bunch of “wow”s from the edge of the pool while they flip and jump 💦

My kids’ last day of school is this week but I’m still working part time over the summer. They’re doing a couple half day camps here and there, but mostly home with me (or my mom as babysitter when I work).

I was denied entrance to grad school for three rou

I was denied entrance to grad school for three rounds of applications, several schools each round.

My road to SLP grad school was NOT pretty.

I had a lot of fun in undergrad (🏴‍☠️). That meant that
my grades weren’t great. I didn’t get in to a grad school during my senior year of college. I spent a “gap year” at home with my parents because I had to.

I was a nanny and a bartender while also taking classes at a local college. I applied to countless grad schools for the next two semesters. I was waitlisted at ONE. I went to their open house to “put a face to a name.”

That December my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. Eight months later I was getting ready to FINALLY move for grad school and got the call that my dad did not have much longer. Just 3 days after his funeral (in NY) I started grad school in Philly.

And here I am, SLPing and talking about speech resources to strangers on the internet. I’m not gonna say “it was worth it” because sometimes this field sucks. Especially in the over-saturated
market where I live. But I *will* say that any way you can get it done is valid and nobody cares if you had a 4.0!

I love recapping the year with my students. It’s actually a great way to plan for next year, since we’re lucky enough to have many repeat students from year to year.

Before my oldest started school, I swore I wasn’

Before my oldest started school, I swore I wasn’t going to do this trend. I figured teachers thought it was a pain and I hate Dr Seuss books.

Then my cousins, both of whom are HS teachers, told me how much they love writing in and reading their students’ books and that I just HAD to do it.

Once I found other book options, I was into it! 😍 I have 3 kids and they all have different books.

My two year old has been absolutely LOVING this type of book lately.

My husband made a comment one night that the baby loved “Stir, Crack, Whisk, Bake” and did I have anymore. HA! Does he even know who he’s married to?!
